WIC announces new income guidelines

The Missouri Women, Infants and Children (WIC) services program has announced revised income guidelines. Public Information Officer for the city of St. Joseph Health Department, Stephanie Malita, says women and families can apply as long as they meet certain criteria.

"It is a program that benefits families with young children.  Women who are pregnant might be eligible, and children and infants up to the age of 5.  You qualify for the program with either a nutrition risk factor and income eligibility.

Malita says families who receive support from the WIC program will have access to financial and educational nutritional support.

"Families that go through the program receive health education, nutrition education.  One of the things the families receive is a check.  And with that funding, they can go to the grocery story and buy specific food."

Malita says that interested applicants can call a number and set up an appointment.

"Here in St. Joseph, we ask that they call 816-271-4723 and schedule an appointment.  Once they come in, we'll talk to them about what the program is,  see if it's a good fit for them, and whether they qualify."
